Alkmene is a German cross of Cox Orange Pippin x Duchess of Oldenburg first produced in 1930, but not widely available to the public until after the war.
Red-orange fruit over yellow. Early ripening -- about the same time as Sansa, mid-September. Sweet, aromatic and honeyed flavor, but sharp.
Annual bearing. Fairly compact. Considerable scab tolerance. Cox-like qualities without the problems, though not a storage apple.
